Rechargeable Batteries

Wireless microphones, sound enhancement systems, multiple remote controls — even portable audio and video equipment — have greatly increased the demand for rechargeable “nicad” batteries. The nicad is an alternative to using more costly alkaline batteries. To get the best performance and longest life from your nicad batteries, follow these four suggestions:

1. Use only 9V nicad batteries, such as CCI Solutions’ rechargeables, which actually charge up to 9.4V, to ensure a steady source of power. Do not use the lower voltage economy batteries.

2. When you charge, be careful not to overcharge. Your nicad battery should recharge overnight, or for about 12 hours. It is not recommended to leave the battery on continuous charge or you will shorten its life. After about a dozen charges, be sure to discharge it fully before recharging. To fully discharge a battery, leave it in a device that is left turned on overnight. This will insure that the maximum charge is developed on future “rechargings.”

3. The best rechargeable batteries offer three or more hours of continuous usage when fully charged. When you need longer continuous service, revert to using a 9V alkaline like the ones made by Eveready or Duracell. You will get six or more continuous hours of use with the disposable alkaline. The disposable lithium batteries last four times the length of alkaline batteries but cost almost three times as much.

4. A helpful companion to rechargeable batteries is a battery tester, such as the Speco F-60. Not only will it provide peace of mind knowing that the battery is charged to a useable level, but it will help determine when the battery needs replacing.
