A Christmas Without Those 3 Horrible Words

A Christmas Without Those 3 Horrible Words

Every year a customer of Stephen McCullough caught himself saying those three horrible words. But this year was going to be different. This year he was going to refuse to say those words. What words, you might ask? "I Hate Christmas!"

It was easy for Stephen to understand how his customer felt. Prior to coming to work for CCI Solutions as a sales professional, Stephen was both head pastor and worship leader and he knew how busy the Christmas season was. "With all the rehearsals, extra planning, change this, change that, it was very easy to lose focus on why you are doing all these things," says Stephen.

Keep the Focus on Jesus

During a recent Sound Theology podcast hosted by Richard Aaronson, Stephen told his audience how he keeps focus during the Christmas season:

The first thing Stephen does is read The Best of Guideposts Christmas, a collection of short stories about the Christmas Season. "Usually one story will stand out and help me focus back on the Lord and just remember to be thankful for all the cool stuff he has done," said Stephen.

Next, Stephen reads through the Christmas Story. Not just the one in the Gospels, but a book called The Life of Christ by Alfred Edersheim. "Edersheim writes a lot about the cultural aspects related to Christ's life and he brings a ton of stuff into a short story," which Stephen feels gives a better understanding about all the miracles and the things that were going on during the birth of Christ.

The last thing Stephen does is watch a DVD called The Fourth Wiseman. This is a fictional story about a fourth Wiseman that wanted to go along to worship the new Messiah. Unfortunately, he kept getting side tracked by helping people and always missed Jesus. The fourth Wiseman eventually dies before he actually sees Jesus. But as he's dying, he sees the Lord saying thank you for all the things he did, because he did them for Him.

Stephen's way to keep focus, may not be your way, but find something that works for you. So, in the middle of all the extra planning, the rehearsals, special lighting projects and all the changes remember that it is all for Jesus. To keep focus, bring Christ back into the reason why you are doing all these wonderful things.
