DVD-R Q & A

DVD-R Q&A
Recordable DVD Media

Q: How many formats of DVD recordable discs are there?
A: Right now there are four:

  • DVD-R for General Purpose Use. Used for businesses, prosumers, and consumers. Most popularly used with Pioneer A04, A03, Apple SuperDrive, Compaq Presario, and Sony Vaio
  • DVD-RDVD-R (Minus R) for Authoring. Used by professional content developers and software producers. Most popularly used with the Pioneer S201 drive
  • DVD+R (Plus R). Becoming the most popular format, the "Plus R" media is for both professional applications and home video. It is read compatible with most DVD video players and DVD-ROM drives.
  • DVD-RAM. Designed for data intensive, high performance applications. DVD-RAM can be accessed in the same manner as a hard drive, with drag and drop capabilities and can be overwritten 100,000 times.
Note: with the exception of the Authoring DVD, all of the above recordable DVDs are available in a Re-Writable format.

Q: Are there any quality differences in the four DVD formats?
A: No, since all formats are digital video, it all comes down to compatibility.

Q: Are there recording decks on the market that record to DVD similar to the VCR?
A: Yes, From makers such as Philips, Panasonic, and Pioneer.Pioneer DVR-533H-S

Q: Does the DVD recorder function the same as the VCR?
A: Yes, very similar. Some even have built in TV tuners. But here's the big advantage of DVD: it is a true digital recording.
