A successful church is built upon great relationships. So are successful church facilities . Case in point, Sunset Christian Center .

You Never Know Who You'll Meet
Years ago, Joel Marple, Sunset's Creative Arts Pastor, attended a sound, lighting and video convention in California , looking to expand his knowledge of worship technology. He struck up a conversation with a tall, amiable fellow who happened to have an uncanny amount of knowledge on the subject. Marple recalls that he “knew what he was talking about and knew how to work within a church environment.” That person was Ron Simonson , Executive Vice President of CCI Solutions.

The discussion soon turned to Sunset's immediate needs and together discussed possible ways to address various problems the church was experiencing with its previous systems. “Not everyone knows how churches operate. They're unique,” observes Marple. “Working in the church setting requires expertise and patience not common in other types of settings. This understanding isn't always easy to come by. Ron's experience with church sound was obvious and he knew how to address issues from a design perspective and an operator's perspective.” A great relationship was born.

In time, CCI Solutions would collaborate with Sunset Christian Center on a range of worship technology solutions and their relationship continues to flourish to this day. “CCI has been great to us over the years,” says Marple. “From the time we were doing ministry in our previous building downtown, to the new facility we're in now, Ron and CCI have been right there and we know we can always count on them. Even after our project was completed and our support was no longer under contract, I can still call Ron and be put in contact with him right away.”

Onward and Upward
When it came time for Sunset Christian Center to design and build their new facility, they turned once again to their friends at CCI Solutions. To accommodate Sunset's contemporary performance-oriented worship services and special events, the 1150-seat sanctuary would require a concert quality sound system, high performance acoustics, lighting for stage performances, and a video system that could handle multiple presentation formats.

Audio Systems
Sunset's audio system needed to encompass spoken word, dynamic worship celebrations, vocal performances, large productions, and other special services. Accordingly, the sound system would require a separate mix for monitors and recording while delivering exceptional clarity and precision regardless of source. CCI Solutions designed and installed a Distributed Array Speaker, dual 18” subwoofers, and EAW low frequency speakers.

This arrangement resulted in warm, consistent and powerful sound quality. In addition, CCI Solutions designed a delay speaker system for the technical balcony that the technical crew uses during services. Because this balcony is located far from the main stage, the delay speakers allow technicians to monitor what the congregation is hearing.

Acoustics
Sunset Christian Center has always placed great emphasis on audience participation. However, it's a huge challenge to create an acoustical design that can accommodate high power contemporary music and enhance the worship experience.

CCI Solutions worked closely with Sunset's architect, Gordon Rogers, Principal Architect of Gordon Rogers Inc. AIA, on an acoustical design for the church. It's a working relationship that Rogers truly appreciates. “ CCI is acoustically sound. They create a warm worship environment with great music and speech intelligibility,” he says. “My approach to every project is to surround myself with expert team members and consult expert advice. That's why I work with CCI Solutions. Their experience working in different types of facilities and with a variety of projects has been extremely helpful to me.”

That was certainly the case with Sunset Christian Center . CCI Solutions employed an innovative combination of room shaping forms, absorptive panels and acoustical reflectors to reduce undesirable reflections and enrich congregational singing.

A vital part of the acoustical system was the design of the suspended acoustical reflectors over the sanctuary seating area. These reflectors were integrated with the lighting catwalks, house lighting and sound system to enhance the acoustical experience, while not interfering with the technical systems. This level of detail and coordination was essential to achieving the performance that was promised during the design phase.

Video
Sunset's video presentation system needed to accommodate a wide range of potential uses, from text projection during congregational singing to video projection. CCI Solutions designed a video presentation system comprised of two 12'x 9' projection screens located on each side of the platform. These screens provide excellent viewing angles to the side and rear seats. A 20' rear projection screen was later added to provide premium viewing for those seated in the front of the auditorium. This screen also furnishes a dramatic backdrop to the stage. The end results are crystal clear images and text that can be easily seen from any seat in the sanctuary.

Lighting
Sunset's sanctuary is used for theatrical presentations, large productions, special programs, and concerts, as well as weekly worship services. As part of its complete design-build service, CCI Solutions works with the church and architect to design not only the lighting, but also the catwalks and stage areas. Working closely with Gordon Rogers Architects, CCI Solutions created a working stage with theatrical draping and integrated overhead catwalks. Extensive lighting options are available from the overhead catwalks and from floor boxes located on the stage floor.

Catwalks are also integrated into the acoustical panels located over the seating area. As a result, lighting is easily accessed for aiming and maintenance, and for making adjustments during setup, program rehearsals and just before the service. Controls for house lighting and theatrical lighting are fully integrated into one control system with several control points in the media center and within the sanctuary.
