How to Use PreSonus Studio One Artist Software[♪♫♪♫................Music Playing] Now I’m going to show you the last 2 pieces of software that come in the box with the StudioLive Mixer. Studio One Artist – Basically, Studio One Artist is also a recording application. But, it really is for when you’ve recorded something in Capture and you want to take that and enhance it and edit it. That’s where Studio One Artist comes in. Of course, you can also record directly into Studio One Artist if you want to. There are templates there for each StudioLive mixer. There’s just a lot more to look at, so a lot of live guys really like Capture for recording just because there’s not a lot to look at. You just hit “Record” and you’re recording. After I’ve got that recording and I want to enhance it, that’s where Studio One Artist comes in. I’m going to give you a quick overview of some of the key points of the software. When you look at the opening screen, in Studio One Artist you see what’s called the “Start Page.” This is showing you all the things that are really important. Here are all of the recent songs that I’ve been working on. Here are demos and tutorials. So I can actually go in and practice on somebody else’s songs. This is a really great tool. Here are all of the audio device set ups for my particular audio devices. When I want to open up a Capture session, I don’t have to transfer files out of Capture to get into Studio One Artist. All I do is go to open an existing document, put it on my desktop, find the song “Open Hands” and hit “Open” and bam! There it is. That’s what we just listened to. Now this is called the arrangement page of the Studio One Artist software. You can see three different buttons in the bottom right hand corner. You have an “Edit” mode, a “Mix” mode and a “Browser” view. The browser is this thing right here on the right hand side. This is essentially where all of my instruments, effects, sounds, files, all of that stuff lives. The browser is kind of like Grand Central Station. This is where I can take stuff from the browser, apply it to my production for a very easy workflow. Let me go ahead and pull up these songs. I’m going to show you how easy it is to start working with these tracks. The first thing I’m going to do is open my mixer. Then I’m going to return the Master Mix to channels 23 and 24. Let me go ahead and just turn off all of the EQ and compressors on that particular channel. Here is where we are at right now with everything flat. [Music begins playing] So, let’s say I want to add a compressor to the kick drum. Here’s the kick drum down here, on the mixer it’s channel 1. Any of these can be color coded or named. I can very easily call it “Kick.” Then if I wanted to take all of the drums, which are basically on the first 6 channels, and change the color of them, I can use SHIFT+SELECT all the way over and change the color to whatever I want. I can also group these together as well. Now I can see my drums a little bit easier. If I want to add a plug-in, I just hit the effects right here in the browser and you can see all of the different effects that I have. If I want to put a compressor on the kick, it’s literally as easy as finding the compressor in my “Dynamics” folder. Here’s the compressor. I just click, drag and drop it straight onto the kick. So there’s my compressor and now I can hear it with the compressor. [Kick drum sounds] Similar to what you saw with Virtual StudioLive, we’ve shared a lot of this technology with Studio One and StudioLive. A lot of the things that people like, the workflow things, in Studio One, we put it into Virtual StudioLive. Just like you saw the “drag and drop” happening with Virtual StudioLive, we can do the same thing here. The other thing that’s kind of cool is you have these effects chains. I can take a whole chain of effects. Let’s say I want a kick drum chain. Here’s one called “Bass Drum.” If I click and drag that straight to the bass drum, or I can drag it straight to the mixer here. Now you can see that’s a gate, compressor and EQ all in one chain. Now we can listen to that… [kick drum sounds] Now here’s before [kick drum sound changes] and here’s after [kick drum sounds with more clarity]. Now from here, I can double-click on any one of these, and here are little tabs that go through all three of the plug ins. You can create your own custom chains as well. You may have certain settings that you like for certain things. You can create your own presets, just like you can in StudioLive. You can come back to them after the fact. That’s how you drag and drop effects. In the same way, you can also drag in other things, like sound effects or samples. In fact, right here, if you click the “Sounds” tab, you’ll see all kinds of different loops and some different beats. [drum sounds begin playing] So, if I wanted that in my song, or if I was creating something new, I could simply put in a stereo audio file here and I could drag it straight in. So there’s a lot of creative tools available within Studio One Artist, just the basic software, to really help you craft your song. In the same way, I could have virtual instruments. What are virtual instruments? A virtual instrument is actually a MIDI controllable sound. Let’s say we don’t have a string section and I would like to be able to make a recording of some strings. where I can actually play along. Well I can create a song in Studio One Artist, to a click track, then I can route the click track through the StudioLive, through one of the channels using the firewire returns, and now we can play along with loops, play along with sounds. It’s a very cool and creative way of implementing other tools to your Sunday morning worship services. I’ve giving you such a quick view of what you can do. If there’s a bad snare hit, for example, when he was playing, let’s listen real quick and see….[sound of band playing] Let me solo the drums real quick. Here’s another thing we can do. Let’s say all of these are drums. If I SHIFT + CLICK against all of them, then right click, I can choose this “Add Bus for selected tracks.” What that does is create a drum bus just like on the mixer where you have subgroups, this is the drum subgroup. Now I can solo all of the drums [drumming sounds] – like that. [drums play isolated from the mix] You know he’s a pretty good drummer! I was waiting for him to have a bad snare hit, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen! So, let’s just pretend that this particular snare was a bad snare hit. Now, when I double click on anything in Studio One, what happens is an editor screen opens up. So right here, below, the “edit” comes on wherever I click. So if I want to click on a floor tom, here’s the floor tom. Here’s the snare. So let’s say this is the snare hit I want to work with… [sound of a snare hit] Let’s just say that snare hit was bad. What I can do, instead of messing with my arrangement up above, I can zoom in here, and then, using my tools…do you see above here?… You’ve got the “Range” tool, the “Cut” tool…let’s say this hit was bad. So what I’m going to do is make a little cut here, a little cut here… then I’m going to hit delete and let’s just say I want to delete that out. Now I want to take this one and move it over there. Well, I can hit Number 2, or I can go over here to my “Range” tool, and just copy this little hit right here. Hit Ctrl+C for Copy. Then, put my cursor right where I want to paste it. Then, just like Microsoft Word, use Ctrl+V to paste it in. Now let’s listen to it. [♪♫♪♫ - Snare sounds with the new edit in place] This works a lot better if you have a drummer that can’t hit the snare very consistently. But we’ve got a good drummer, so we don’t have that problem. So, that’s an idea. Let’s just say that this hit was way, way louder than the other ones. Well, right here on the wave form I’ve got a little handle. I can just size the volume on any particular event. The editing is really powerful in Studio One. It’s very, very simple to use.. It allows you to take your recording and fully produce it. There are all kinds of plug-ins and all kinds of editing tools. In fact PreSonus has over 100 hours of tutorial videos on YouTube, also at PreSonus.com, on Studio One specifically. Everything I am showing you right now comes with the free included version. Now I’m going to fast forward a little bit. Let’s pretend that I mixed this song. We cheated a little bit… in the fact that Justin mixed this song last night. Because to do a proper mix I wouldn’t actually do it here in the church, mixing it through the PA. I’d want to take the files home and either use some studio monitors or really good headphones to do the mix, so I could really hear every single little thing and edit it like I want. Let me just show you what we ended up with. So here is where this song started. This is with no effects. So just listen to this… It’s really low isn’t it? [Music is soft at first then becomes very loud] Woo! That’s too loud. Sorry! [♪♫♪♫ Sound of the whole band playing] Okay, that’s what it sounds like completely flat, completely mono. That’s no effect.s. That’s just the tracks as they came off of the mixer. It sounds pretty bad. You actually have to go in and work on it a little bit. You would never have a mix like that, with the faders pushed all the way up. So now, here’s Justin’s mix with some effects, a little trickery and now let’s hear what it sounds like… [♪♫♪♫ Band playing with the mix applied to it] So you hear a little delay,. You hear some reverb. All of these effects are coming from Studio One Artist. We didn’t use any kind of 3rd party plugins. Everything you hear is what you get in the box with the StudioLive Mixer. That’s a quick example of what you can do. [♪♫♪♫...............Music Playing]

The reason is that, you show up on a Sunday morning you’re working out bugs in the system, maybe there was a wedding on the Saturday before, stuff’s not patched…There’s a buzz in the PA… Some musicians are late…The Worship Leader is frantically trying to go through the songs… I know. I play in church. I know exactly what it’s like. You’re trying to get the music together and it’s not really a true sound check. There’s no way I can actually listen to the compression setting on my snare drum and tweak it in that application. But, let’s go back to Capture, and low and behold, I’ve got a recording right here. What I’m going to do is set a little loop point and I didn’t even get to the Toms. They do that little intro at the beginning of the song with the Toms, so I’m going to actually just set a little loop point right here. If you look back at the top of the mixer, how do I get the channels from Capture back onto the StudioLive? Thiis is so easy… Literally, on every channel, there’s a little firewire return button. I can just swipe my finger across like this. Now I have all of those channels coming right back through the mixer as if I had a band on stage. [♪♫♪♫...Music begins playing] Let me go ahead and solo the floor tom. [Floor tom sounds isolated playing from the mixer] That’s a little rumbly, but let’s go ahead and, that’s where it ends, so I’m going to move my loop point a little bit so I just get that one little section. [Music playing] Okay, so now, let me select that channel… Hit “Load,” and find a “low tom” Preset. [sound of tom comes up through the mix] Still kind of hearing a little low mid kind of “cardboard” sound. I think it’s around 400 or so, 3 something maybe. Let’s look at the low-mids. [Toms continue playing] One way to try and identify where the problem is to actually go and boost the channel until you hear the sound you don’t like, [Toms continue playing the recorded loop as Rick boosts certain frequencies] Somewhere around there. Then, we’ll add a little bit of high end to that as well. [Toms continue via the recorded loop] Okay, so that’s after. Here’s before [Toms sound muffled]. Here’s after [Toms sound much clearer] It’s starting to sound like a floor tom! So now, if I want that to be a beginning point for my next tom, just hit “Copy” and load it onto the channel next to it. Hi “Load.” Done. So you see how that goes very, very quickly. Now I’m just doing this very, very quickly to give you an illustration of how this works. Now let’s add some effects. I think that’s one thing you’d like to see. There are two effects processors on the StudioLive. Those are Global Efffects that any of the channels can be assigned to. They’re 32-bit algorithms…realy, really nice sounding delays, reverbs, ambient sounds. If you’re using a delay, let’s say, on the vocal, you’ve got a “Tap Tempo” right here on the board. Which is really cool. But if we want to look at the Effects, if you hit the Effects button, you can see I’ve got a plate reverb and a Stereo delay already assigned to A and B. And what I’m going to do now is hit the Effects Mix Control on A. As you can see I’ve got my drums assigned to this. Let’s assign no overheads… And no keys…just drums. So, snare drum and toms are now assigned. So now let’s listen to this section again. [Music playing....♪♫♪♫] [Music stops] If I want to give a little bit less or more, all I do is hit the Mix Control under Effects A and I turn it up or down. So now, when the vocal comes in, we’ll go ahead and listen to that. We’ll add a little delay for the voice. So here’s his vocal right here. We’ll just solo it so you can hear it. [Music playing] We’ll go to the Effects B right here [Male vocal sounds through speakers] That’s actually pretty good. Now, we can tap it in. [Male vocal continues singing] So if we want to adjust the feedback or something like that, we can actually go into the Effects page and dig in and add a little bit more feedback. Basically, once you have the feedback set of how many repeats you want, it’s just literally on the tap tempo. You can have the tap activated for whatever was the last Delay you used. So, it’s always active. Whenever a song starts, I just tap in the tempo that I want the delay to be. It’s really, really easy to do. That’s basically how you get a virtual sound check. So now, what you’ve seen is basically 4 of the bundled software packages that come with the StudioLive. Let me just ask Ron over at CCI, Ron, what do you think? What’s your favorite one so far? [Ron] I’m telling you Rick. All four of them are incredible! I think the two that I really like are Virtual Sound Check and also the SMAART integration. To be able to rehearse with the band when the band’s not there, really be able to fine tune, just like you were doing with the drums, without the band…that is awesome. I wanted to do that so many times. The band leaves at 8:00 on Thursday night. Everybody’s got to go home. If I just had another 15 minutes to tweak on it that would be great. But the SMAART integration’s pretty cool too. Because, we all hear feedback, but you rarely get a chance to see it. We use SMAART on the professional version to optimize our sound systems that we go out and do for installations. So it’s pretty incredible to have that tool available in your own church. So, Ron Simonson here, President of CCI Solutions. We’re producing this StudioLive Webinar because we relieve believe the PreSonus StudioLive mixer is a great solution for churches and you’ve seen how incredible it is as a digital mixer, but also with the software packages.
