How Bright Should It Be

Determining the correct brightness of an LCD projector to fit your application

The most important factor to consider in choosing an
LCD projector is the light characteristics of the room you will be using it in. The general rule is: the more available light there is in the room the brighter you need the projector to be in order to present a quality image. Projector brightness also decreases as you move the projector further away from the screen.

Here are some questions we typically ask customers that can help determine the amount of light in your room during projector operation times:

  1. Does the room you will be using the projector in have windows?
  2. If so, do the windows throw direct light on the projection surface?
  3. Do the main lights in the room have dimming capability and is it feasible to dim them during presentations?
  4. How far will the projector be from the viewing screen?
  5. What types of information will you be projecting (movies and motion video, text and graphics, etc)?

    6. If you determine after answering the above questions that your room will be in full light most of the time, then as a rule you will want to look at projectors with an ANSI Lumen rating of at least 2500 and preferably more. Less bright projectors are usually fine for situations where you can dim the main lights or have a darkened area where the projection screen is.
