Well-loved vocal classic for demanding vocalists

The Shure Beta 87A™ Handheld Vocal Microphone is consistently a top choice of performers and audio technicians around the world due to its superb accuracy and detail, and rich vocal production. This long-standing favorite now incorporates a cardioid polar pattern and has been named the Beta 87C™. Shure’s new Beta 87C Condenser premium vocal microphone delivers studio-grade performance and a smooth, extended high-end frequency response in a cardioid condenser design. The uniform cardioid polar pattern of the Beta 87C enables users to effectively reject ambient noise arriving at the rear of the microphone, an attribute that will be especially appealing to users of personal monitors and others who frequently experience undesirable sounds bleeding into their mixes.

Features:

  • Smooth, wide frequency response, slight presence rise
  • Uniform cardioid polar pattern for maximum isolation
  • Minimum off-axis tone coloration
  • Low-frequency roll-off compensates for proximity effect
  • Three-stage pop filter minimizes breath pop and noise
  • Break-resistant stand adapter

Stephen Lund
I've long liked the Shure Beta87 microphones and I particularly like the basic cardioid model. The Beta87 is so clear and clean it brings vocals out very well. The down side is that it can be a bit too bright, especially on high sopranos. So generally I prefer it on male vocals, but it can work in so many places.

To me, the C cardioid version works better than the original A model. Many people think that supercardioid just means a tighter pattern. But it's really not that much. What does change between cardioid and super/hyper-cardioid is where the null is. It's a lot easier to tell people to point the back of the mic toward an unwanted source, than saying put it at 120 degrees off the back axis. Plus the C is just slightly less brittle in the high end.

The only reason I took a star off is not because of this mic, but because the KSM mics are just a bit better - and more expensive. So depending on your budget, I would definitely go with the Beta87.
